Cross-Border Importation in the News
There have been many articles in the news recently about the importation of prescription medicine. On May 7, the Senate
passed legislation introduced by Senators Byron Dorgan (D-ND) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME) allowing Americans to import medicine from other countries.
Along with the original amendment, the Senate also passed an unnecessary road block
intended to prevent the safe and legal importation of prescription drugs. In a move designed to
block the Dorgan-Snowe measure, language was added prohibiting importation of prescription drugs
unless the Secretary of Health and Human Services can certify that it is safe to do so. Despite
the fact that safety provisions are already built into the bill, this provision is designed to
give unnecessary discretion to the Secretary to block importation.
What does this mean for you, the American Consumer? Not much, really. For people who already order from Canada (and other countries),
nothing will change; they will continue to order the less-expensive but effectively identical medicine. For those people who
wish to start ordering medicine from Canada or other countries, this legislation will not change their minds.
